Google have substantially changed the way they rank websites this year in what has been dubbed the Panda Update. On the whole I believe that this is a good thing and now quality and relevance of content have never been more important. Anyone involved in internet marketing needs to understand what this means to them, and also learn the new strategies for optimizing their site.

It had a big impact and the ripples are still being felt 7 months after it was implemented. Google intended the update to reduce rankings for low-quality sites that are often called content farms. These include article directories and big content sites with massive numbers of links.  These sites would often have more links that the most important authority sites like CNN, BBC, WebMD and Time for example.

In an interview with Wired.com Google’s SEO Maestro, Matt Cutts, explained a lot of the thinking behind Panda. Clearly trust played a big role, and Google employed manual reviewers to visit sites and ask these questions – is this an authority site and would I feel comfortable handing over my credit card details to them?They also looked at the number of ads and the quality of the content. Google want quality content, not the thin material that is just published for search rankings. Yes, there is an art and a science to writing great content but quality and relevance are always the main criteria.

So what should you do to adapt to these changes. Here are five steps you can take straight away

1 Write longer, higher quality and more relevant content. Over 1000 word long articles are now recommended

2 Reduce the number of Ads on your site and make them less intrusive

3 Design your home page and inner pages for the visitor not for advertisers

4 Increase the Page load Speed

5 Reduce the bounce rate on your site and increase the time spent on site for your visitors (install Google Analytics to check this if you have not already)

 

Make your content more readable and user friendly and you should be fine.

To protect yourself you need to take five important actions that are based on my conclusions from many hours of evaluating the effects of Panda. Nobody knows the exact Google algorithm but these actions are important to give yourself a fighting chance. Here are the five actions

#1 Publish Quality Content

Google want to reward quality,relevant content that users will benefit from. Sites like the New York Times and Web MD have nothing to worry about, but sites that have thin articles that are just taking up space are suffering. So make sure that your content is high quality and that readers will want to stay on your site and return to it. Look at your Google Analytics and check the amount of time that visitors spend on your site and how many pages they visit. You want to ensure that your average visitor stays over 90 seconds and visits a minimum of 2 pages. Anything less will hurt you..

#2 Action – Publish Longer Articles

For Google, the longer the article the better. Typically most articles on websites are 3-500 words long. Now, we recommend that they should be 600 words+ or even better, over 1000 words. Think of your website as a professional magazine or journal that is providing substantial content for its target market. This is what Google wants.

#3 Remove Duplicate Content

Google is now employing manual reviewers who are looking carefully for duplicate content. So avoid using articles from other sites, or embedding lots of You Tube videos. This will do you more harm than good. Instead create your own original content, and you do not need a huge quantity to get to page one. Use  CopyScape to check for duplicate content.

#4  Reduce the Number of Ads

If your site is covered with many different Ads you need to reduce them as Google do not like sites that exist specifically to sell products. We recommend one block of Ads, whether it be Adsense or a Banner Ad.  Aim for an uncluttered clean design that you would like yourself if going to another website. Put the visitor first and you will not go far wrong

#5  Get the Right Links at the Right Time

Whatever changes Google ma ke, links to your site will always be the most important factor in a high ranking. Most links are junk, and beware of services that promise to submit your site to thousands of directories and social bookmarking sites. These links are largely discounted by Google. What really matters is links from relevant, quality sites that have a high Page Rank (over 2 is ideal). If you want to know a site’s page rank install the SEO Quake toolbar for Firefox.  It will tell you what sites are worth linking to.  So start by writing some valuable articles and get them published on leading sites in your market with a link to your site.
