One of the biggest problems facing internet marketers is information overload. Every day there are new programs, new tactics and new technologies that look very enticing and it is so easy to be seduced by the very latest big idea. Indeed, we entrepreneurs love ideas, models and innovation and there are few areas as alluring as the world of online marketing.
When I was teaching at Oxford I experienced the same challenge with the environmental issues. I was on every newsletter list and read all the alerts about climate change, renewable energy, recycling, conservation, green building, water etc. Of course, it was impossible to stay up to date with all these complex fields of knowledge and the same is true with internet marketing.
No one can be expert in SEO, viral videos, PPC, CPA, social media, landing page conversion, blogs and the hundred other disciplines. Its like asking a Professor to teach courses and publish papers in all the environmental sectors. It’s impossible. The problem is that we continue to believe we can know it all. Maybe you can be a student of all this knowledge, and understand most of it. However, knowledge is not action and theory is not practice.
So start by thinking about what your business outcome is, then create a plan for achieving your outcome. Then find the experts either in-house or outside to execute your plan and achieve the results. Just having the information in your head means nothing. If you want to build a new house you need to envision it and then hire the architect, the project manager, the builders, carpenters, electricians, plumbers etc.
The same is true with an online business. Start with the desired results and then think about the fastest, most secure way to achieve them. Only learn new skills that are going to really add value, and delegate or subcontract the rest
