Sleep Apnea

Insomnia may be a better known sleep problem, but many people do not realise that sleep apnea is a very common sleep disorder that they should be watching out for. In fact, it is estimated that between 20 and 40%  of adults will suffer from this condition at some time. It is more common during middle age and beyond, but it has been known to affect women and even children.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common sleep problem, mainly among adults, that results in sufferers stopping breathing briefly during the night. This causes them to wake up, and they may not know that they are waking up at all.

There are actually three main types of sleep apnea. The first, obstructive sleep apnea, is the most common. This is where there is a physical blockage that obstructs breathing during sleep, and it is a common sleep problem in people with low muscle tone, and people who are obese. Central sleep apnea, on the other hand, involves the brain. Here, the impulses that control breathing are garbled, and the person suffering from the apnea does not even try to breathe. Mixed apnea, the final type, is a combination of both.

How Is Sleep Apnea Treated?

If you or someone you love is affected by this common sleep problem, then there are a few things you can try to prevent sleep apnea from happening, and get better sleep:

  • Sleeping on your side can usually prevent obstructive sleep apnea from occurring. Some people wear t-shirts with tennis balls or other objects sewn onto the back to achieve this.
  • If your sleep apnea is related to obesity, making an active effort to reduce your weight may also help.
  • Avoid alcohol and sleeping pills, which act as depressants and relaxants, both of which can make your sleep problem worse.
  • Make sure that your head stays elevated when you sleep.
  • If you have a temporary case of sleep apnea, due to respiratory infection, a decongestant can help.
  • In many cases, surgery, known as CPAP, is the most effective way to cure obstructive sleep apnea.

If you find that you go to sleep early, but you are still tired when you wake up in the morning, you may be suffering from this sleep problem. Undergoing observation at a sleep clinic is often the best way to diagnose sleep apnea, and to find the best, most effective treatment.
