Practical Intelligence, the key to Successful Internet Marketing

One of the most interesting discoveries of my life is that IQ is not all it is cracked up to be. At school and university IQ was everything, the major determinant of your success. Then in the “real world” it became clear that EQ or emotional intelligence was at least as important, as many of the most brilliant academic minds fell to the wayside due to lack of interpersonal skills.

Even more than IQ or EQ it is PQ or Practical Intelligence that I have found to be the hallmark of outstandingly successful people. Practically intelligent businesspeople are excellent at solving problems and getting things done. Above all they are mentally tough or resilient. Resilient people are very successful. The best manager I ever worked with always took on the tough issues. She always acknowledged and faced her fears head-on, never avoiding hardships that most of us would shirk from. For example, she had a lifelong dread of public speaking, so whenever she had to give a group presentation she would practice and rehearse for countless hours. Never would she back out, because she knew that her power came from constantly taking on what she most feared.

While her colleagues spent hour after hour every day avoiding tough tasks, engaged in endless meetings and planning exercises, she always did what needed to be done. With tremendous self-discipline and courage she outpaced them all, and became the first female executive of her corporation.

She overcame her fears which really is the key to top performance. She developed genuine mental toughness and I will never forget the principle she always lived and worked by “Do what you know needs to be done, not what is easy to do. “ Imagine what you could achieve if you lived by that principle every day. Imagine what you could do if you spent the first 2 hours of every day working on your most important task and did not reply to emails or surf the net. Imagine what you could do if you spent 80% of your time working with your most valuable clients, and not the ones you just like to hang out with.

In internet marketing you will always face the choice of what you know you must do and what you would like to do. Which choice you make will largely decide if you are going to be a successful internet marketer or not
